Why fitness, nutrition & mental health belong in your benefits strategy

By Aaron Barnett, Director of Lifestyle Healthcare, Peppy

The foundation that everything else is built on

I have spent years working in lifestyle healthcare and one thing I keep coming back to is: you can have the most sophisticated benefits package in the market, but if you are not looking after how your people move, eat and manage their mental health day to day, you are building on unstable ground.

Fitness, nutrition and mental wellbeing are the foundation that every other health outcome sits on. Get that right and everything else works better. Overlook it and even your best clinical interventions will only go so far.

Why this is a business issue

The employers I speak to are under great amounts of pressure. Absence is up. Productivity is harder to sustain. Good people are leaving and the reasons are not always obvious. What I find, time and again, is that lifestyle health is quietly driving a significant portion of that picture.

Poor nutrition affects energy, concentration and mood in ways that show up in performance long before they show up as a formal health issue. Physical inactivity compounds fatigue, increases chronic illness risk and makes mental health harder to manage. Unmanaged stress does not stay contained. It escalates, and the cost of that escalation, in absence, in turnover, in lost output, is substantial.

Presenteeism often driven by lifestyle health issues costs UK employers roughly three times more than absenteeism.

The problem with most wellness programmes

Most organisations are doing something in this space. A gym discount, a wellbeing app, a monthly newsletter with nutrition tips. I do not want to dismiss any of it because the intention is right. But intention and impact are different things.

What I see most often is fragmentation. Wellness sits over here. Clinical support sits over there. Nobody is joining the dots. And when you do not join the dots, you miss things that matter.

Nutrition advice that does not account for where someone is in their fertility journey is incomplete. A fitness programme that does not consider the hormonal reality of menopause is going to fall short. Mental health support that operates separately from physical health is only telling half the story.

Lifestyle healthcare works when it is woven into the broader health picture. That is the only way it delivers its full potential.

What employers should be doing

In my experience, lifestyle healthcare that genuinely moves the needle shares a few things in common. It is personalised rather than generic. It is delivered by qualified practitioners who understand how lifestyle factors interact with specific health conditions and life stages. It is accessible, proactive and it sits alongside specialist clinical care rather than next to it on a list of separate benefits.

When those pieces are in place, the impact on how people feel and how they perform is real and it lasts.

How we approach lifestyle healthcare at Peppy

At Peppy, lifestyle healthcare runs through every service we offer.

When someone is working through fertility treatment, navigating menopause, recovering from birth or managing a men's health concern, our lifestyle support is there alongside the clinical care. Qualified nutritionists, fitness experts and mental health practitioners who understand the specific health context that person is in, genuinely tailored guidance.

The goal is always the same. We want employees to feel supported as whole people, not just as a condition to be managed. That is what long-term health looks like and it is what employers are increasingly recognising they need to provide.

Frequently asked questions

What is lifestyle healthcare in the workplace? Lifestyle healthcare covers employer-supported health support focused on nutrition, physical fitness and mental wellbeing. When it is done well, it helps employees build genuinely sustainable healthy habits, reduces the risk of conditions developing further down the line and supports stronger performance and engagement at work.

Why should employers invest in lifestyle healthcare? Lifestyle health issues are one of the biggest drivers of presenteeism and absence, and they are largely preventable with the right support in place. Investing in nutrition, fitness and mental health proactively reduces long-term health costs, improves day-to-day productivity and gives employees a real reason to stay.

How does lifestyle healthcare support specialist health benefits? Lifestyle factors have a direct influence on outcomes across menopause, fertility, pregnancy, mental health and more. When lifestyle support is integrated with specialist clinical care rather than sitting separately, the results are meaningfully better.

What should I look for in a workplace lifestyle health benefit? Personalised, expert-led support that connects to broader health services. Qualified practitioners across nutrition, fitness and mental wellbeing. A digital platform that makes access genuinely easy. And a provider that treats lifestyle health as part of the clinical picture, not separate from it.

How does Peppy deliver lifestyle healthcare? Lifestyle support is embedded within every Peppy service. Employees access nutrition, fitness and mental wellbeing guidance through the app alongside their specialist clinical care, with practitioners who understand the health context they are navigating. It is joined-up support for the whole person, across every life stage.
